Okay. Okay. I admit it. It has indeed been some time since I dropped in at AlterNet. Then again, better late than never; don’t you say?
Recently we have seen many a story in the local mainstream media in Bangalore about how the City is fast becoming (or already is) THE suicide city. Many researches and statistics have also ‘corroborated’ with the general trend in public opinion.
- Deccan Herald: City witness to spate of suicides
- The Hindu: Series of suicides shocks Bangalore
- Voices For All: Bangalore City tops in suicide rate
- India Together: The sociology of suicide
In this context, an article published at AlterNet gains special significance. In The Suicide Myth, Rebecca Goldin explains how “careful scrutiny of statistics shows that the media is helping perpetuate a long-standing myth in the study of depression and suicide.”
Can this be true? Going by Chomsky & Herman’s ‘Manufacturing Consent‘ I would tend to agree with these thoughts.
But that’s me! What about you?
